Easy access to government data via opendata.swiss

Open government data (OGD) promotes transparency, participation and innovation in all areas of society and the economy. In Switzerland, ever-greater amounts of data are therefore being made available free of charge and in machine-readable format by the Confederation, cantons and communes, in line with the 2019-2023 Open Government Data Strategy for Switzerland. The data is published on the opendata.swiss portal.

Open Government Data Strategy for Switzerland

The Open Government Data Office at the Federal Statistical Office coordinates the implementation of the 2019-2023 Open Government Data Strategy for Switzerland in close collaboration with the Federal Department of Home Affairs. New and existing data from the cantons, communes, towns/cities or enterprises affiliated with the Confederation will gradually be made available as open government data. Data which, under any other legislation, is not to be published or is only to be published subject to more restrictive conditions, such as data protection, copyright, statistical secrecy or protection of information, is not made publicly available.

opendata.swiss portal

The opendata.swiss portal provides users with easy and secure central access to the open data of the Confederation, cantons and communes. Provided there is a public interest, data from third parties – enterprises affiliated to the Confederation and private sector players contracted by the federal, cantonal or communal authorities – is also published, even if it is already available on other portals. The portal merely contains a catalogue of available data, but the data itself is managed by the providers. opendata.swiss is run by the Open Government Data Office at the Federal Statistical Office.
